I am having a LOT of microphonic trouble with the 7788s in a high gain stage. I run a 40mV input signal into a 7788 triode at 15mA CCS. Plenty of gain, nicel output. But dang, if I bump the tube or board or chassis, the grids inside...

guy, i noticed you've mentioned a DHT 10Y linestage.i'm wondering what are your thoughts if there is a relatively easily obtainable (in say lifetime quantities:)) DHT (or triode stripped DHP or DH tetrode a la 307A or 807) capable of d...

N-set,actually, as you drew it, it became not too complex amp. What I would like to find is some kind tube like 833 only twin triode. Then it would be possible to have one chassis with a single drive and two output power stages. With 100W on fil...

Hi,I thought on tetrodo (KT-88, KT-120, KT150) and write pentodo, sorry. Wherever the tetrodo sound were nothing special I personally find them a lot of better than solid state, that why I was asking, and these days one can have 300W with to KT150 P...

After seeing the variation in the sound of the TU-X1 to the quality of electricity, and thinking about recent discussions about the Direct Heated Triode, I would like to start a compendium of anecdotal observations of the idiosyncratic nature of comp...

Celsius, I think you do not take in your equation the input voltage. If you bias 6E5P with 4.1V then it can pass 4V with no feedback. Since the tube has under normal circumstances 33 times gain then you have 132V RMS from your driver stage, wish is ...

Hi Cat,It seems the 6e5p is driving the transformer directly. I've used various versions of even simple mosfet followers to good effect at the headphone level, but never considered using a speaker level transformer. Did you and Dmitry cons...

There was a cool Russian-made tube GU-48. It is high-gain, high power pure direct heated triode with 300W on plate and 10A on carbonized tungsten cathode. I did not hear but it looks like something in the class of RCA 833 tubes. I think Japanese sel...

Romy,I added the fuse recently just for protection for the output transformer since these 6C33C tubes plate current can get very high and might damaged them. Also DC coupling on this high gm tube can cause plate current to go max if something failed....

Jim, It is the super tube – you forgot to mention the amount of noise with its transconductance…. You use the 7788 as a driver to drive 2A3? This is kind of strange: the 7788 has relatively low bias and a typical line voltage should sent 7788 deep in...

The "lack" of HF is definitely one of the wonderful things that makes one think of spending 30K on a phono stage. Glad to hear you are "suffering" a similar "dirth" of HF [noise] with your DIY corrector.I wasn't going to say anything, but I won...
Romy,How about putting bass tower #2 directly behind#1, but facing the opposite direction from #1? This would keep #2 away from the turntable, yield a symmetrical setup and enable #2 to energize the hot spot around your chair...
I need juts one amps and one speaker
I don't design amplifiers for myself. I design them for others. And I am always on the lookout for something new or different or any possible improvement. Not all customers wan...

Thanks for the comments Romy. Would appreciate pointing out where the schematic is for the 7788 phono preamp or even better your friend´s 7788 mic preamp schematic. I can use the phono stage circuit minus the RIAA as a starter and th...

Since I "forgot" to mention it before, the very interesting amp I mentioned up the thread is the Nat Audio Generator monoblock, a Serbian PP triode/SS hybrid of some sort. Now that I have the MA-9S2s, there is no reason for me to check back on t...

Yes, the people in the beginning of the thread were right – the DHT two stage solutions do sound more interesting than one stage amp. Still, it does not suggest that if I have 12dB more gain on my single-stage triode I would not be able to load m...
Still partially wrapt in mystery, but here is potentially the first SS DSET:http://www.firstwatt.com/sit1.htmlI say potentially for that is not naturally Pass's direction, but each monobloc is designed to be tunable to its specif...
What is the "reverse engineering" version of an SET circuit that would accomplish - in terms of audible results - what you want? The reason I suggest 3 stages is only because I see a gap between required input and necessary outp...

Hi N-set,Yes I added big cap bank to the second stage cathode. Yes it is possible to use filament power supply for fixed bias like Romy did.But I have a stereo EAR834p with a single filament PS. So, I was afraid that one PS for both channels can caus...

Well, since I will not experiment with many of them I'm kind of narrowing down the scope of the amps that I would like to get. In 70s-80s break there was a short period of time when Yamaha and Sony made top of the line amps around V-FET output t...
My reaction is that, arrangement- and performance-wise, it would make excellent elevator music in something like a Marriott
Yes, this is very accurate observation and this type of music very dominates the stupid audi...

I have never used EL34 in triode, but I think it is not hard to find acceptable examples of this fast, reliable tube, and with conservative bias it should let your 6E5P "shine through", if that's what you want. Nothing like 811, 845, etc. in this re...
Hi Romy, Well, I see in the photos what look like the newer Herbie's Hal-Os with the titanium rings on 2 of the 6C33Cs. Have you made any observation of the sonic effect of these things yet? Rgs, JJ
Truly, I did buy th...

BTW, do anybody know any indirect heated triode, perhaps larger then 9 pin that I might still employ as the one-stage amp. It would need to have 40-50 times gain at 1K on plate (and proportionally changed), more then 3-4V on grid, work at sub 400V an...

Yes, you are right, I forgot that it is mono PP radio. I such case one ECL82 triode is driver stage and one is phase splitter. Here is a full cur cut of the radio. There is nothing special in it – a very typical circuit. http://www.goodsoundclub.com...

Paul,I used both halves of 6C33C this time, I planned to use two 6C33C and uses each half for more power, but that would shortened the life of 6C33C if run one triode at max power dissipation. I used the C3G as driver, since I dont use negative feedb...

N-Set, this tube does look interesting, in that it mostly fits your stated theoretical desiderata, save the true triode part. It will also be interesting to see how you swing the drive voltage in only one stage, and how you will from there arrange a...

Alex,
I cannot answer your questions objectively. It was over 15
years ago when I was working with this phonostage and since I built the last
version, I did not make any experiments with it. I do feel the design is
spectacular, and I am lu...
